The Power of Hypnosis
Imagine how much more fun or productive your trips would be without the fears often associated with travel — fear of flying, fear of illness and even fear of travel itself. I don’t suffer from any of those, but I have my own non-travel issues, and I recently took a major step in lessening them.
Last week, I had a tremendous experience at the Chicago Hypnosis Center through hypnosis performed by Catherine Johns, a certified hypnotist and a master practitioner of neuro-linguistic programming. This was my first experience with hypnosis, and it was wonderful.
Johns describes hypnosis as “a gym for the mind . . . to exercise the brain in a different way.” My brain has always been trained to worry too much about too many things. I hoped my brain would be retrained to release the anxieties.
In our pre-hypnosis discussion, I quickly became at ease with Johns (a former longtime Chicago radio personality). Johns patiently walked me through some questions until we got to my core problems. We eventually characterized them as lumpy, gray baggage.
The actual hypnosis session started with the goal of getting rid of that lumpy, gray baggage (or at least lessening it). I sat back in a big, comfy chair, and Johns started talking me into a state of complete relaxation.
It is while in the trance-like state that the real work is done. I remember Johns talking to me about dropping my “baggage” at my feet. I remember picturing myself doing just that. About 30 minutes later, when Johns guided me back into a fully conscious state, I felt lighter and brighter (as if some of that baggage was gone).
This was my experience for my issues, but I talked to Johns at length about overcoming other fears (such as the previously mentioned travel fears). Johns and her partner Karen Hand are trained to bypass the conscious mind to get to the subconscious mind. The overall process would be similar, although the suggestions given to the subconscious would vary.
I didn’t have to accept my issues, and travelers don’t have to accept their fears. I no longer have to imagine my world with less angst. Thanks to hypnosis, my new world has less.

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool. I had lots of sleep problems, caused by anxiety. I went through several hypnosis sessions and am now sleeping much better.

I once scoffed at hypnosis. By wife was having all sorts of fears and they were getting worse. She wanted to try hypnosis and although I doubted it would help, I supported her. She went through about 5 sessions and along with her regular therapy, I gradually saw changes in her behavior. I can’t say hypnosis was the magic cure, but it was the first thing t make a difference. I have changed my opinion on hypnosis.
And no, this has nothing to do with her being married to a Marlins fan!

Oh my, I remember Catherine Johns from WLS. I grew up on Lujack, Winston, Landecker and the rest. Johns was a great part of that era.
I support anything which might help someone navigate through this world. I have tried yoga, meditation, prayer, therapy and many other approaches to soothe my soul. I applaud your willingness to try something new.

If you know the hypnotist is going to try to retrain your brain, don’t you automatically try to out-think this once you are fully conscious again? It’s not like you forget that you have fears. Doesn’t that knowledge bring it all back anyway?

Interesting, I may need to give this a try. It has to be better than drinking before you travel to settle the nerves!

Hearing the words hypnosis just sounds like a joke to me or a scam to get money out of you.
But after really reading about your experience and doing more research it is probably something I should in fact experience for myself.
My mind has been all other the place being a senior in college getting ready to graduate and looking for a job. I probably need my brain to get a little more exercise to relax me.

hey, sounds kinda cool, glad it helped.

I agree with Trev when he wrote that he supports anything to help people. Why not? Maybe hypnosis won’t work for you, but maybe it will. It is so worth the effort. If it doesn’t work, at least you tried one more thing and had a new experience.

Life is too short to live with too many fears. I applaud anyone who tries to make their life better.
I tried hypnosis and it didn’t do much for me. Maybe I had a bad experience. Still, I would recommend it for others and I plan on trying a duifferent hypnotist. I can really see how it could work to “retrain the brain” as Ms. Johns would say.

I just had an amazing trip and I know part of it was from the hypnosis we did before I left. Helping me know my feelings were important and to ask for what I needed from the people I was traveling with. Hypnosis is a much better then popping a pill for everything (even though sometimes medication is necessary). Working with Catherine at Chicago Hypnosis Center has opened my world.

6 years ago I used hypnosis to quit my smoking and it actually work. Unfortunately I started smoking again 4 weeks ago due to a prfect storm of events. Regardless, if I can quit on my own I plan to try hypnosis again.

At first thought I would not want to be put under hypnosis, but after reading other people’s views it is worth a try if your fears are taking over your life. Seems like yesterday Catherine Johns was on WLS … oh how time is flying by too quick!

I am a newcomer to these blogs, having started after meeting you in Vegas. I enjoy the wide range of topics written about here. You all have a lot to offer.
I tried hypnosis years ago and loved the effect. I have gone back for other issues and refreshers and it never fails me. Friends tell me it is all in my own mind, which might be true, but maybe I needed hypnosis to bring it out. The point being that whatever it is, it is working and I plan on continuing it.

I suffer from great apprehension but usually only on takeoffs of flights. It gets really bad at times. I have tried everything. I guess I should try hypnosis. I need to travel for work and I would do whatever it takes to relieve this fear.

I overcame my fear of flying through meditation, but if hypnosis works for people, I say do it. I did some research on hypnosis and just wasn’t sold on it at the time. I wouldn’t be opposed to it now, but meditation has proven to work for me so I will ride that train as long as it works. To each his own and good luck to all.

I actually had some sessions with Catherine at the Hypnosis Center. I have nothing but praise for her and hypnosis. I had severe weight issues which were crippling my life and my job. It took a few sessions, but we got to the bottom of the problem and Catherine worked me through the solutions. It has been life-changing. I am now in control of my eating and my life.

I had no idea Johns was a hypnotist. I grew up listening to WLS and loved that whole gang.
I am amazed at the amount of travel some people do. I have to believe a decent percentage of them has some sort of phobia associated with travel. My friend is a neat freak and could certainly use a bit of help in that area.

Thanks for your first hand account of hypnosis. I was doing web research on hypnosis and I came across your blog. I was debating trying it in an effort to get over my travel fears. I think I am going to give it a try.

Do you speak during the actual act of hypnosis? Do you get a set of mental exercises for yourself on your own time? How would future sessions be different?
I am afraid of flying and I would appreciate any additional info you could give me.

I remember Johns from back in those great days of Chicago radio too. I didn’t know what she was doing now but it sounds like a good thing and I’m glad that people can benefit from it. Travel can be a challenge at times even for those of us without anxiety so more power to her.

I grew up with Catherine Johns on WLS.
I have been unsure about hypnosis in the past. However after reading this article I have a different attitude. I think for anyone who has any issues it would certainly we worth trying.

I also used hypnosis to help me quit smoking. Coincidentally, while in the middle of my sessions, I realized I smoked much more around travel times for me or my whole family. Hypnosis got to the root of this and I am happy to say that I am smoke-free for several years now. It does work. Travel does not have to be filled with angst.

One of my friends had horrible worries about flying. She tried tranquilizers, alcohol, therapy, meditation and probably many other attempts, but nothing worked. She went on like this for years and almost gave up flying. One day, she ran into an old classmate who was a hypnotist and she offered to help. The transformation was amazing. I saw what she went through before hypnosis ended her flying trauma. I can’t imagine how hard it was. Hypnosis has allowed her to live a normal life and not freak out for weeks about upcoming flights.

I had a session with Karen Hand at the Chicago Hypnosis Center. I had several travel related fears. Hypnosis greatly reduced my fear level. I am not completely free of fear, but it is now very manageable and probably only minimally above the average person. Fear of flying can be reduced!

At the risk of being repetitive, I fully support anything that helps. There is nothing wrong with hypnosis. It won’t hurt you. Sure it might not help, but therapy might not help either.
I think it is great the GT addresses so many great topics.

I have read some crazy stuff on the internet over the years, but this takes the cake finding this in your magazine. What a great article since your mag is all about travel and this guy writes about fears. So many people are scared to death to fly, of leave a comfort zone. I throughly enjoyed your article, and being a fearfull flyer, guess what I am going to do right away? I’m trying hypnosis!!! A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU GUYS!!!
