Cleaning Out the Clutter
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009For those of you who don’t enjoy the idea of cleaning out a closet, you can relate to my constant procrastination when it comes to purging my apartment of unwanted clutter. However, I can’t quite explain the feeling, but when I do get this sudden urge to clean a closet, it usually means something good is about to come my way.
The urge to clean often comes when I am packing for a trip. I prefer to come home to a clean apartment than one in need of cleaning. I experienced the urge to clean over the past weekend. I’m hoping this means I am looking forward to an exciting week since I have no plans to be on the road this week!
I’m not sure why the feeling of cleaning is only a pre-travel ritual for me or a sign of good things to come, but the bigger mystery is the fact that no matter how often I do clean, that clutter keeps coming back! Where does it all come from? I was shocked at how much had accumulated in such a short amount of time.
Anyone who has had to move apartments or homes can relate to this feeling of clutter. I remember when I moved into my first apartment, only two of the four closets were filled, but when I moved out, it looked like two people were living in the apartment! Nonetheless, I don’t mind clutter all that much. My rationalization is that everything I collected over time reminds me of a certain moment or memory from my life. Maybe that’s why I find cleaning so difficult. I just don’t want to forget a moment worth living! At least that’s my excuse for not throwing things out, and I’m sticking to it!
