Purple Mountain Majesties

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, I am surrounded by Rockies here outside Denver–the mountains and the baseball team that’s playing in the World Series.

When I said in that blog that the view made me want to sing America the Beautiful, I hadn’t realized just how much that song is taken to heart locally here. In particular, the Colorado Rockies team color is purple–that’s as in “purple mountain majesties.”

With the Rockies mania that’s going on around the World Series coming to town, there’s a lot of manmade purple majesty around Denver too. Union Station, the Colorado History Museum, the top of the City and County Building, and even some trees are bathed in the glow of purple lights.

I also learned, via the Denver Post, of the history of Dinger, the Rockies team mascot. The cuddly purple triceratops is not just a Barney knockoff. When they were digging the foundations of the station, they found a dinosaur bone. That triggered a marketing play that involved the team ownership claiming to have found a dinosaur egg, which after much hoopla “hatched” Dinger.

He’s purple for the aforementioned reasons. What’s Barney’s excuse?
