Through Fresh Eyes
Friday, August 3rd, 2007When my family comes to visit, it seems to always brings out the best of where I currently live, in Hermosa Beach, Calif. Sunny days, beautiful beaches, and the Pacific Ocean are all things that originally pulled me to this beach town about 15 minutes south of LAX. My brother, Rob, has been here all week visiting from the Midwest where it is hot and muggy, a bit different from my days of consistent 75-degree weather.
Rob keeps pointing out things that I take for granted on a daily basis. He can’t get over the number of restaurants, bars and shops all within walking or biking distance of my apartment. Hermosa Beach especially flourishes in the summer with art walks, volleyball and surf tournaments, and my personal favorite, free concerts on the beach.
Rob has truly rejuvenated my sense of where I live. I have been spending the past couple of days just looking around, trying to find new things to which I may have been turning a blind eye for the past three years. It seems that once your eyes have been opened to the positives of your surroundings, it can change your outlook on your life. Someone once told me that getting out of your town for a while can make you really appreciate where you live, but I think getting someone’s unbiased opinion can sometimes do that just as easily.
