Getting to Know You
Wednesday, July 25th, 2007When we started this blog several weeks ago, Global Traveler Publisher Fran Gallagher asked each of us to respond to a series of questions designed to tell our readers a little bit about ourselves.
Through the answers to those questions, posted on the blog site, we each share a bit of our personalities by revealing tidbits of information — favorite color, favorite movie, favorite book, favorite place, etc. I’ve known most of my colleagues at Global Traveler for several years, but I didn’t know that Alex Young played Division 1 volleyball at UVM or that Dick Evans has a good eye for art. It never occurred to me that Fran would enjoy gardening (he does) or that slow drivers annoy Kim Krol (OK, I would have guessed right on that one). And who knew that Mary Hunt’s favorite song would be “Born to Run“?
I find it interesting that we can get to know someone as a friend or colleague, but not really know anything about their personal likes and dislikes, pet peeves, even athletic prowess. Maybe that’s why I’m so fascinated by the series of questions television show host James Lipton asks guests at the end of each episode of Bravo TV’s Inside the Actors Studio .
Inspired by French journalist Bernard Pivot, the seemingly benign questions lead to answers that can reveal quite a bit about an individual’s personal priorities. How would you answer?
1. What is your favorite word?
2. What is your least favorite word?
3. What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
4. What turns you off?
5. What sound or noise do you love?
6. What sound or noise do you hate?
7. What is your favorite curse word?
8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
9. What profession would you not like to do?
10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
