Sports, Travel and Adventure
Monday, July 9th, 2007I am often asked what was my favorite trip or what is my favorite destination. I usually pause and have to think, as I have had so many incredible experiences. Having been publishing and writing about business travel for nearly 22 years, I have traveled the globe (mostly for business) and have seen some incredible things.
Riding horseback at the foot of the Giza pyramids at sunrise has to be one of the best. I was in Cairo for an industry conference and a group of us decided to wake up well before sunrise and make our way to the pyramids. Nothing was arranged, we had to seek out a stable and a guide and do this all on site. We caught a cab and were at the pyramids in no time (as frequent travelers know, modern Cairo runs nearly to the foot of the pyramids). Our guide fitted us with the appropriate horses and off we went, galloping and often “running” where the terrain would allow. The sun rose slowly and the sites and sounds of the city awakening with the massive pyramids before us was amazing.
There are many other trips at the top of my list. I tend to prefer the less-traveled destinations, and inveterate golfer that I am, playing golf in these places makes for a memorable experience. Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Brazil, and Ireland have made for interesting golf experiences beyond what a normal traveler might see.
Sporting while you travel brings a host of different areas, experiences and people into view, and it adds to your trip; so wherever you go, I highly recommend it.
